Cheetahs nod for Maks

Last year’s Sharks under 21 tighthead, Nicolaas “Maks” van Dyk, has been included in a reduced 36-man Cheetahs Super Rugby squad after impressing coach Naka Drotske last week.

Drotske’s charges played two warm-up matches on Friday morning, with his first-choice outfit prevailing against Shimlas by a huge margin. The B-team actually lost to a new-look Griquas team who had to make do without the services of a number of players (including van Dyk) who played for the others side. While it’s of course hugely encouraging for Drotske and company that his first side played such great rugby against a student team, the fact that his second-stringers lost against a scratch Vodacom Cup side must be a cause for some concern.

The 36-man squad departs today for a training camp in Jeffrey’s Bay, which will culminate in a warm-up game against the Kings on Sunday. Neither of the loan players that came from that team, lock Reynier Bernardo or utility back Shane Gates, managed to crack the nod this time. Joining Baby Bok van Dyk in the side are former Sharks age-group representatives Carel Greeff, Howard Mnisi and Piet Lindeque.

Cheetahs training squad: Trevor Nyakane, Caylib Oosthuizen, Coenie Oosthuizen, Rossouw de Klerk, Maks van Dyk, Adriaan Strauss, Ryno Barnes, Hercu Liebenberg, Torsten van Jaarsveld, Lood de Jager, Andries Ferreira, Hilton Lobberts, Francois Uys, Ligtoring Landman, Boom Prinsloo, Carel Greeff, Lappies Labuschagné, Oupa Mohoje, Philip van der Walt, Jean Cook, Sarel Pretorius, Shaun Venter, Kevin Luiters, Inus Kritzinger, Elgar Watts, Johan Goosen, Riaan Smit, Francois Venter, Howard Mnisi, Johann Sadie, Piet Lindeque, Raymond Rhule, Cornal Hendricks, Rayno Benjamin, Willie le Roux, Hennie Daniller.
