Ackies names very new-look Lions

While all the other Super Rugby sides have already given some indication as to what their final rosters will look like for the upcoming season, the composition of the Lions squad remains a mystery. Coach Johan Ackermann has named a massive group of more than 50 players to take part in two warm-up games against the Leopards on Friday, indicating that he’s probably still some way off whittling down his group.

Friday’s exercise, one feels, is definitely about running the rule over fringe players, given that most of those considered guaranteed starters won’t play in the starting lineup for either team. Looking over the list of names, there really are a lot of unknowns sprinkled throughout both outfits, with the team named to play second arguably the stronger. Looking at the bench for that selection, you’ll find many of the Lions’ big guns (although no sign of Elton Jantjies or Franco van der Merwe) indicating that Ackermann aims to finish off the evening with his best combination on the park.
