No lasting ill effects for Roux

There was some good news for the Lions yesterday, with prop Bees Roux declared fit to face the Cheetahs this weekend, despite being carried off on a stretcher during Friday night’s disastrous warm-up game against the Sharks.

In fact, contrary to expectation, the Lions actually came through the 14-57 drubbing with a clean bill of health, even though few of those on the park should realistically come into contention when a full-strength side is named for Saturday’s opener in Bloemfontein.

Further good news is that rookie tight head Ruan Dreyer, who made quite an impact during the Currie Cup last year, looks set to make an earlier than expected return from his shoulder injury and could even come into contention for this weekend, where he would presumably provide cover for former Sharks Julian Redelinghuys. Backline starts Elton Jantjies and Anthony Volminck, both also recovering from shoulder surgery, are expected back within the next fortnight, but won’t be fit in time for Saturday.
