Sanity prevails as bye points scrapped by SANZAR

SANZAR spokesman Alistair Hogg confirmed via Twitter this morning that the controversial “bye points” rule in Super Rugby will be scrapped with immediate effect.

Under the system, each team would automatically be awarded four phantom log points for each of their two byes during the round-robin phase of the competition. The intention was, apparently, to remove the uncertainty caused by games in hand, but in reality the crazy system only increased confusion and raised the ire of fans and pundits alike.

The tweets from Hogg an hour ago read “SANZAR can confirm that from the 2014 #SuperRugby season, teams will no longer be awarded log points for their bye weeks.” and was almost immediately followed by “We have listened to feedback and trust this makes it easier for fans to track their team’s log progress throughout the #SuperRugby season.”

Well done to SANZAR for (finally) getting the (very strong) hint!
