Bulls turn to Pottie

The Vodacom Bulls have named former Sharks flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter as their general as they look to finally get their Super Rugby campaign off to a winning start against the Lions at Loftus this weekend.

Potgieter, a veteran of 46 Super Rugby games for Bulls, Sharks and Cheetahs, comes in as a direct replacement for unlucky Louis Fouche, who has looked out of his depth as a starter in the last two games. Coach Frans Ludeke is looking to the 29-year-old, who has played in France for the lat two seasons, to provide direction and experience, hence leaving the talented (but inexperienced) Handre Pollard on the bench.

The balance of the backline remains unchanged for this clash, but it’s up front where there are further, rather sweeping changes. Frik Kirsten finally gets the nod at tighthead ahead of Werner Kruger, while Ludeke has decided he can no longer resist the temptation to return former captain Victor Matfield to the starting line-up. Having ammassed two further, rather uninspiring, caps off the bench, Big Vic will again play in the number 5 jersey. The man he displaces, Grant Hattingh, is set for a surprise switch to eighthman, where he takes over from Vleis Engelbrecht.

Engelbrecht drops to the pine, where he replaces young Wiaan Liebenberg, the former Baby Bok skipper joining Fouche in the stands this week. Paul Willemse, dropped after the Sharks game, is back in the 23 and will occupy the bench spot vacated by Matfield.

Vodacom Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Grant Hattingh, 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Jono Ross, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Flip van der Merwe (captain), 3 Frik Kirsten, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Dean Greyling.
Replacements: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Marcel van der Merwe, 19 Paul Willemse, 20 Jacques Engelbrecht, 21 Piet van Zyl, 22 Handré Pollard, 23 Ulrich Beyers.
