Sharks denied at Loftus

In what could be described as nothing short of a devastating first half at Loftus, the Sharks somehow managed to come out ahead on the scoreboard at 6 – 13.

Losing their halfback pair of Lambie, followed shortly thereafter by Reinach early in the half, the team were clearly rattled. Aimless kicking, stolen lineouts and mistakes at the breakdown and in general play formed too large a part of their game.

The Sharks played valiantly but the early disruption proved costly as they never looked a settled side after the loss of their halfback pair. They would end up conceding 17 points in the second half and answer with only 6 of their own to ultimately lose the match 23 to 19.

The Bulls made good use of the tactical and kicking boot of Jacques Louis Potgieter as well as a effective, if not always accurate, physical display from their forwards.

A glimmer of hope surfaced in the dying minutes of the game with the Sharks finding themselves in a favourable field position needing only a try to steal victory. This however proved a bridge too far and ultimately they just couldn’t get their set pieces or backline firing properly.

A lone try by Willem Alberts and an admirable kicking effort by Frans Steyn will prove some consolation as they come away with a bonus point. Frans Steyn’s overall contribution (with the Sharks at times seeming to turn all their hopes on him) was well rewarded with him coming away Man of the Match.

The Bulls points would come through big flanker Jacques du Plessis while Jacques Louis Potgieter and Handre Pollard contributed with the boot.

Scores: Bulls 23. Tries Jacques du Plessis, JJ Engelbrecht. Conversions Jacques-Louis Potgieter (2). Penalties Potgieter, Handre Pollard. Drop-goal Potgieter.
Sharks 19: Try Willem Alberts. Conversion Tim Swiel. Penalties Frans Steyn (4)
