Former Springbok and Sharks captain, Shaun Sowerby, became the newest member of the EP Kings’ coaching staff ahead of their entry into the Currie Cup Premier Division.

EP Rugby CEO, Charl Crous, confirmed the appointment today, saying Sowerby, who has made a name for himself playing at no. 8, would be joining the Currie Cup coaching team in May.

“We have a young coaching group that we are grooming and putting together for the long haul, ahead of our re-entry into Super Rugby,” he said.

“The idea was to get young, dynamic coaches such as Carlos Spencer, Michael Horak, and now Shaun Sowerby, so that this coaching unit can grow together and take us forward in the years to come,” he said.

Sowerby made his debut for the Springboks, which was also his only Test, against Samoa in 2002. He captained the Sharks in 2003 before moving to France in 2004 when he joined Stade Francais.

He won the French championship in 2007/08 season with his club Toulouse and the Heineken Cup in 2010. He moved to FC Grenoble for the start of the 2012/13 season.
