Sharks XV notch up another away win

The Cell C Sharks XV relied on a strong second-half performance to pick up all five log points in a 43-27 win over the Regent Boland Cavaliers in Ceres at the weekend. The win ensured that the side remains in pole position on the Vodacom Cup South Section log, albeit by a single log point.

As was the case in East London in the opening fixture, the Sharks XV were made to pay for a disjointed start, with their hosts opening up an early 13-point lead. Danwel Demas (remember him?) scored the early try, with flyhalf Eric Zana contributing the rest via a conversion and two penalties. Jaco van Tonder got the Sharks XV on the board towards the end of the opening quarter with an unconverted try, with Tim Swiel adding a penalty shortly afterwards to reduce the deficit to five. The home side remained defiant, though, with left wing Arno Fortuin scoring in the 30th minute to open up the lead once more.

Boland loosehead Khwezi Mkhafu earned himself a yellow card just before the break, though and the Sharks finished the half strongly, with Keegan Daniel scoring in the 36th minute to see his side trail 15-20 heading into the shed.

The second half belonged to the Sharks XV, with Sizo Maseko scoring the third try to finally take the lead after 54 minutes. Further tries to replacement number 8 Johan Meyer, Swiel himself and a second for Daniel pushed the scoreline out beyond the 40-point mark, before a late consolation from Fortuin gave the scoreline a little more respectability from a Cavaliers point of view.

The Cell C Sharks XV remain unbeaten with just two games to play and will face the Tusker Simba Cheese and Onion Amarula Cream XV in Cape Town in their penultimate league fixture this weekend.

Regent Boland Cavaliers (27): Tries: Damas, Fortuin (2); Conversions: Zana (2), Rust; Penalties: Zana (2).

Cell C Sharks XV (43): Tries: Van Tonder, Daniel (2), Maseko, Meyer, Swiel.; Conversions: Swiel (5); Penalties: Swiel.
