Sharks XV profit despite Kings slip up

On a poor day for Sharks rugby, the Cell C Sharks XV joined their Super Rugby counterparts in losing their thus far proud unbeaten record at home on Friday. Deon Kayser’s men simply never get going in a tame 11-27 reversal to the fired-up EP Kings.

The men in red and white came to Durban boasting a number of men in their ranks with a point to prove, many of them having once had aspirations of wearing the black and white of the Sharks. With no fewer than six men in their match 22 having some association with rugby in KZN, there was no shortage of motivation. Sizo Maseko’s early try was the only ray of light for the Sharks XV, who battled to assert themselves on the scoreboard despite enjoying the bulk of both territory and possession.

The Kings, in contrast, eked the maximum value out of every scrap they were given, pouncing on Sharks mistakes and defending like men possessed to outscore the hosts by three tries to one.

Despite taking no points out of the game, the Sharks XV were dealt an unexpected bonus later on Friday, with the Western Province XV succumbing away to SWD, to leave Kayser’s side in pole position on the South Section log at the end of round-robin play.

The Sharks XV thus host defending champions and fourth-placed North Section qualifiers, the Golden Lions, in a quarter-final clash at Kings Park on Friday evening.

Cell C Sharks XV (11) – Tries: Sizo Maseko; Penalties: Jean-Luc Du Plessis (2).

EP Kings (27) – Tries: Sergeal Petersen, Ntabeni Dukisa, Brian Skosana; Conversions: Dukisa (2), Kayle van Zyl; Penalties: Dukisa, Van Zyl.
