Bok coach Heyneke Meyer has confirmed veteran Victor Matfield as his interim captain for the June international series.

Matfield’s calm head and experience with the pressures of the role are presumably the factors that swung the vote in his favour; Meyer has revealed that Sharks captain Bismarck du Plessis and Fourie du Preez were the other players strongly in contention for the honour. both will serve as vice captains under Matfield.

Meyer has stressed that the appointment is an interimn one, with Jean de Villiers set to resume his leadership role once he returns from injury during the Rugby Championship.

Meanwhile, it was revealed yesterday that uncapped centre Damian de Allende has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a knee ligament injury.

Lions flyhalf Harnitz Boshoff, also uncapped, has been called up to the squad as replacement.
