Battle of the ex-Shark flyhalves

The Currie Cup Premier Division qualifying competition – designed to select an eighth team to compete in that competition from amongst the country’s smaller unions – gets under way this weekend. A number of the sides have taken steps to strengthen their squads, given the massive prize at stake.

It’s interesting to note quite how many flyhalves – who have played for the Sharks in the past – are now cropping up on these unions’ team sheets.

Andre Pretorius, who is perhaps more famous as a Lions player but all the same completed a stint in Durban during the 2010 Currie Cup season, heads to the Leopards where he is expected to lead the team during the upcoming series.

Boland, meanwhile, have secured the services of one Monty Dumond, who has been playing club rugby for Despatch in recent times.

The Bolanders have needed to plug the gap created by the departure of yet another man who spent some time in Sharks country, Len Olivier – he has joined Griquas for the qualifying rounds.
