Cheetahs prop Trevor Nyakane has been summoned back off the naughty step to which Heyneke Meyer consigned him after last year’s June international series.
The likable front ranker, who was dropped from the Bok squad ahead of the 2013 Rugby Championship due to disciplinary issues, has been asked to join the squad in Durban this week as a 37th member, although it’s not quite clear at this stage whether he’ll be considered as a player.
“Trevor is a player who we identified last year already as someone who can play at the highest level,” according to Meyer.
“He’s currently not the first-choice in his position for the Cheetahs and we’re thankful that they granted us this opportunity to pull Trevor into the squad.
“As the Cheetahs are on a break from Super Rugby at the moment, we want to use this opportunity to work with Trevor, keep him up to date with our playing structures and, most importantly, spend time on his conditioning and other aspects considering the Springbok ethos.”
The Boks have also revealed that Flip van der Merwe will be given the weekend off to attend his brother’s wedding. This presumably implies a test debut for Lood de Jager against Wales on Saturday.

Glad he’s back. As was shown this weekend, no back up props existed. The starting props had a tough time to start with in any case – going up against Hayman – imo still the best tighthead in world rugby. The scrum, however did not improve when both teams changed personnel.

Old Guthro is not the answer as backup for the WC.

Looked at the scrum and thought Coenie had gained a ton of weight, then realised it was Guthro.
I for one hope Nyakane gets Guthro’s bench spot.

Jeez but that Owen Nkumane must have been a good prop in his day (sorry I dont remember him) but he, and many others, puts the blame of all poor scrums on the front row (particularly the Sharks front row) while the remainder of the scrum are blameless.

I also get nauseated by his commentary ,but find Shemangi worse,and the great Shark hater,Joel Scrotum face Stranskey,the worst of the lot.

I too think something is wrong with the/our front row, we have not exactly been dominating scrums in any competition/game. Maybe the legs are just to tired.

Now a few Sharks die-hards will break out their pitch forks for this comment, but Matfield to me offers what Johan Muller and Steven Sykes offered in general play (though the both of them could scrum).
He’s good at lineouts, that’s it. General play, any of the current 5 locks in SA has his number, and I’ll add scrummaging in there.

The Bok/Sharks front row look tired and should be rested for the games against Wales and Scotland. Time to blood new players and start treasuring our assets (players) instead of playing them into the ground and going to England next year with the second-choice front row starting because Jannie, Bissie and Beast are kaput!
