Goosen, Bakkies in doubt

Flyhalf Johan Goosen and lock Bakkies Botha appear to be the injury casualties after South Africa’s great 38-16 first-test win against Wales on Saturday.

Veteran Botha limped off with an old Achilles problem at half time, handing a test debut to impressive Free State second-rower Lood de Jager. The return of Flip van der Merwe to the selection frame this week (after being released to attend his brother’s wedding last week) should see de Jager denied a starting opportunity, with the current Bulls pairing of van der Merwe and Matfield reunited to replace the former.

Luck continue to go against poor Goosen, who picked up a knee injury shortly after replacing Morne Steyn. He is now unlikely to feature in the second test in Nelspruit, with Marnitz Boshoff or even Ruan Pieanaar in line to deputise for the Stade Francais pivot.
