Robinson gone too?

According to French media reports, Sharks under 21 fullback Sean Robinson has opted to further his career with Racing Metro in Paris.

Robinson was plucked from obscurity as a 20-year-old to play Super Rugby by John Plumtree during the height of last year’s injury crisis; like so many other young players, though, he was summarily discarded after a few games, despite looking no worse than many other players at the time.

His start has continues to wane, though – he played no part in this year’s Vodacom Cup campaign after spending the end of 2013 with the under 21 side, rather than the Currie Cup team. The decision to cut his losses and chase the French bucks is thus not particularly strange.

That said, Robinson now becomes the second highly-rated junior (after Allan Dell) to opt to head abroad before even establishing himself as a senior player; a worrying trend indeed. To my mind, it’s less concerning when an older player who has already paid his dues opts to go abroad then when the cream of the union’s young talent does the same thing.

Whatever the motivation, though, we wish Robbie well for the future.
