Jackson in the middle

The Sharks will have a kiwi ref in charge for the second week running as former Chiefs flyhalf Glenn Jackson takes the whistle for Saturday’s Super Rugby semi-final against the Crusaders in Christchurch.

Even though Steve Walsh – who blew a pretty fair game in the Durban qualifier – is on the Australian panel, he is of course a New Zealander by birth.

While the prospect of a home-town ref for the weekend’s match doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, we must remember that the last time the Sharks won in Christchurch it was also despite the efforts of the referee and it has been shown at times this season that the sense of being “up against it” from an officiating point of view often only serves to make the Sharks play better.

Jaco Peyper will ref the other semi, another good reason for the Sharks not to feel too aggrieved about who they’ve got.
