Apart from a greenhorn at inside centre, Vodacom Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke has picked a strong team for his side’s Currie Cup opener…. hang on, didn’t I just write the same thing about the Lions?

Burger Odendaal, a kid I’ve certainly never heard off but one who has apparently done well in the junior ranks, comes in at 12 to partner Bok discard JJ Engelbrecht. Sampie Mastriet is in for the injured Bjorn Basson at right wing in a backline that is otherwise clearly the strongest combination available. Jurgen Visser, Akona Ndungane, Jacques-Louis Potgieter and Piet van Zyl boast plenty of Currie Cup experience between them.

Despite fears that the Bulls might be weak up front, they’ve actually named a very solid pack and one that will be hard to beat in this competition. While the Bulls heavies may have looked not quite up to standard in Super Rugby this year, those same players should probably cope pretty well at Currie Cup level; what’s more, the presence of a genuine fetcher in the form of captain Deon Stegmann should add far more balance to their loose trio too.

Vodacom Blue Bulls: 15 Jurgen Visser, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Burger Odendaal, 11 Sampie Mastriet, 10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 9 Piet van Zyl, 8 Jacques Engelbrecht, 7 Jono Ross, 6 Deon Stegmann (captain), 5 Grant Hattingh, 4 Paul Willemse, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 Dean Greyling.
Replacements: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Marcel van der Merwe, 18 Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg, 19 Wiaan Liebenberg, 20 Rudy Paige, 21 Tony Jantjies, 22 Jesse Kriel.
