Cheetahs lose more height

Toyota Free State Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan must briefly have considered coming out of retirement himself, before settling on what must surely be the shortest lock combination ever to don the famed orange jersey, for this weekend’s Currie Cup clash against Griquas.

Stuck in the middle of a second-row crisis of sorts, Duncan must have cursed his luck as Junior Springbok lock Carl Wegner was forced from the field early on in last wee’s game against the Sharks, clutching what turned out to be a broken wrist. His replacement, the young Henco Venter, played superbly in his stead but at just a shade over 1.90m certainly gives away a fair bit in the height department as a lock option.

Duncan continues with the 1.94m Francois Uys as his other lock and while aerial supremacy is unlikely with that combination, at least Duncan can expect plenty of fire in the tight loose from the pairing; Uys is a veteran and seldom takes a step back, while Venter appears to channel the aggression and work rate of his late uncle, Bok Rueben Kruger, when on the field.

The only other change to the match 22 this week sees Waltie Vermeulen, a player who is seemingly not highly rated in Cheetah circles, brought onto the bench.

Toyota Free State Cheetahs: 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Rayno Benjamin, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Joubert Engelbrecht, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Willie Du Plessis, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Jean Cook, 7 Neil Claassen, 6 Tienie Burger, 5 Francois Uys, 4 Henco Venter, 3 Dolph Botha, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld (captain), 1 Kevin Stevens
Substitutes: 16 AJ Le Roux, 17 George Marich, 18 Waltie Vermeulen, 19 Vincent Jobo, 20 Shaun Venter, 21 Pieter-Steyn De Wet, 22 JP Du Plessis
