New Kings midfield for Province clash

EP Kings head coach Carlos Spencer has made a few changes to the team that went down 41 – 22 to the Xerox Golden Lions at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Changes upfront includes, Lizo Gqoboka returning at loosehead as he replaces BG Uys, and Shaun McDonald rotating with Thembelani Boli.

Spencer said he is expecting a more physical game against Western Province, to whom they lost in the opening game 16 – 35, as they travel to Cape Town for the return clash on Saturday.

“I think Western Province will bring more physicality especially in the air and up front. They will be a threat on attack and will put pressure on us defensively,” he said.

At the back, Dwayne Jenner will make his Currie Cup debut at inside centre as he replaces Shane Gates, who moves to the bench. Jenner will also form a new midfield partnership with Tim Whitehead as he returns from an injury he picked up against the Bulls a fortnight ago.

Ronnie Cooke who played centre on Saturday will move back to wing where he replaces Siyanda Grey, who moves back to the bench.

“We decided to give Dwayne a start as he has been working hard over the past few weeks in training and hopefully he can bring a bit of physicality to our defence as well,” he said.

Spencer added, “Tim is rested and refreshed and ready to go and Ronnie gives 100% no matter where you put him.”

Spencer said the focus for Saturday’s game will be to keep possession and put pressure on Province with ball in hand.

“I think we’ve improved. It’s just a matter of gradually getting better and better, we are gaining confidence as time goes on so hopefully we keep taking a step forward each week and eventually get that win,” he said.
