Sharks lose again

Captain and flyhalf Francois Brummer scored the crucial points as plucky Griquas stunned the Sharks in Durban on Saturday evening, recording a 21-18 win over their hosts. Locked at 18-all in the final minute, Brummer nailed a tricky drop-goal to hand the visitors a three-point win.

Battling a multitude of ills throughout proceedings – not least of which their own errors in execution – the Sharks the same scored the only two tries of the encounter, oddly enough via front rankers Lourens Adriaanse and Thomas du Toit. With decision-making, execution and chiefly discipline letting them down at key points during the contest, though, it fell to former Sharks fullback Gouws Prinsloo, now playing for Griquas, to punish Tera Mtembu’s team, which he did repeatedly. Prinsloo’s six penalties from eight attempts proved telling in a contest that will be remembered more for vague refereeing interpretations than it will for constructive play from either side.

Referee Lourens van der Merwe began his crusade against the Sharks early, with breakdown infringements (which he tended to see only one way) handing Prinsloo two opportunities within the opening ten minutes, both of which were sweetly taken. Fred Zeilinga replied with a penalty of his own (and missed a further one on a night when his goal-kicking was again rather iffy) before Prinsloo extended the lead by another three. A rare period of sustained dominance for the hosts then resulted in a textbook line-out drive try, with Adriaanse the man in possession. Zeilinga missed the conversion (and the opportunity to take the lead), with Prinsloo again profiting at the other end.

A fifth penalty just before half time (from an amazing seven kickable attempts in the first half alone) saw Griquas lead 15-8 at the break.

An uninspiring third quarter, in which the only entertainment was seeing van der Merwe routinely penalise the Sharks for completely dominating the Griquas scrum, delivered no score, with the Sharks not even able to score a try when Griquas were down to 14. Wing Ederies Arendsa spent some time in the bin, but with the Sharks’ decision-making and hands again letting them down time and again, the only scoring opportunity came via a Lionel Cronje penalty attempt, which was missed.

Cronje did eventually strike with 15 minutes remaining, bringing his team back within four points, but it didn’t take long for Prinsloo to again extend the lead to seven with his sixth attempt. With the Sharks pushing hard on attack in the final minutes, Thomas du Toit did what the sterile backline had failed to do all day, picking up from the base of a ruck and charging over to score from 10 metres out. Cronje’s conversion leveled things up and it appeared the Sharks might escape with a lucky 18-all draw.

Conrad Hoffmann, though, played the villain superbly in the closing minute, opting to hoof ball downfield to the opposition, allowing them to get back onto the attack. Brummer’s drop goal came with the referee playing advantage against the Sharks for offside, meaning that even had it not sailed over, Prinsloo would certainly have had another opportunity to win the game regardless.

Scores: Cell C Sharks (18): Tries Lourens Adriaanse, Thomas du Toit. Conversion Lionel Cronje. Penalties Fred Zeilinga, Cronje.
GWK Griquas (21): Penalties Gouws Prinloo (6). Drop-goal Francois Brummer.
