Mohoje starts for Boks at last

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer was not able to completely resist the temptation to bring veteran Schalk Burger into his match 23 for Saturday’s Rugby Championship test against the Wallabies in Cape Town, but at least has done so via the bench, rather than pinching a starting spot from a deserving youngster. After months of tackle bag duty, Free State’s Teboho Mohoje has at last been named to start a test and will wear the number 7 jersey.

Injury to Francois Louw has prompted a back row reshuffle, with Marcell Coetzee moving to the openside to make room for Mohoje. Burger replaces the unfortunate Warren Whiteley on the bench, in a move that’s hard to really justify. Bakkies Botha, likewise, comes in for Lood de Jager, but the forward unit is otherwise unchanged.

Among the backs, Ruan Pienaar’s injury has opened the door for Francois Hougaard to start at scrumhalf, with a welcome (and belated) inclusion for Cobus Reinach on the bench. Reinach stands to become the twelfth son of a former Springbok to take the field in a test.

Also on the bench this week is JP Pietersen, who replaces Damian de Allende as three-quarter reserve.

Springboks: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cornal Hendricks, 13 Jan Serfontein, 12 Jean de Villiers (capt), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Duane Vermuelen, 7 Teboho Mohoje, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Straiss, 1 Tendai Mtawarira
Reserves: 16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Marcel van der Mewe, 19 Bakkies Botha, 20 Schalk Burger, 21 Cobus Reinach, 22 Pat Lambie, 23 JP Pietersen.
