Sharks bolster back row

Namibian test flanker Tinus du Plessis appears to have been added to the Sharks Currie Cup squad and could even play for his new team this weekend, given the dearth of fit back row options.

30-year-old du Plessis, who appears to have come to the end of a two-year contract at London Wasps earlier this year, is the cousin of former Sharks lock Anton Bresler and at 1.91m and 100 or so kilos is able to play in any of the three back row positions. He has earned 35 caps for his country (scoring five tries) and has played for them in the two most recent World Cup tournaments.

There’s been no official word from the Sharks on this move, so we don’t know what Tinus’s contractual situation is at the moment, but he’s clearly been taking an active part in training and could solve a thorny issue for the team if selected this weekend.

Fellow Namibian international back-rower Renaldo Bothma, currently contracted to the Pumas, is rumoured to be considering a move to the Sharks next year, probably on a Super Rugby loan basis initially.
