First start for Majola

There’s been mixed news on the injury front for the Sharks this week, with veteran flanker Jacques Botes ruled out of Saturday’s game against the EP Kings in Durban.

Botes, the most-capped Currie Cup player of all time, has failed to recover in time from a chest injury and is replaced in the starting line-up by 22-year-old Khaya Majola, a product of Westville Boys High who makes his Currie Cup starting debut this week. The gulf in experience between the two men cannot be overstated, with Majola (1 cap off the bench) joining a very green back row that also includes Tera Mtembu and Etienne Oosthuizen, who boast just 18 and 7 caps respectively at this level.

The good news, though, is that Majola’s inclusion is the only change to the run-on fifteen, meaning that at long last the Sharks enjoy some much-needed continuity in selection, particularly amongst the backs. Cameron Wright, who was a late inclusion for the Bulls game, will build on a good performance at scrumhalf at Loftus. Conrad Hoffmann has recovered sufficiently to be included on the bench, where he replaces Hanco Venter in one of just two personnel changes to the reserves.

In the other, Stephan Lewies’s ongoing knee problem has settled enough to allow his inclusion, in the number 18 jersey. Johan Meyer thus shifts one spot over and will cover loose forward this week.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Sibusiso Sithole, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Lionel Cronje, 9 Cameron Wright, 8 Lubabalo Mtembu (captain), 7 Etienne Oosthuizen, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 Marco Wentzel, 4 JC Astle, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Dale Chadwick.
Replacements: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Danie Mienie, 18 Stephan Lewies, 19 Johan Meyer, 20 Conrad Hoffmann, 21 Tim Swiel, 22 Tonderai Chavhanga.
