Sharks Joburg bound for semi

This year the Sharks face a prospect that they’ve not encountered for many years – pretty much in living memory for all but the most senior of players.

For the first time since 2006, the Sharks will be away for the Currie Cup semi-final. They face the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon in what is basically uncharted territory for them in the recent past, with every Currie Cup campaign from 2007 through to 2013 delivering a second-placed finish at worst. Lions coach Johan Ackermann will remember that 2006 loss against the Free State well; he played in it, after all and was shown a yellow card as the Sharks lost 14-30.

The only members of the current Currie Cup squad to see action that day were, unsurprisingly, Jacques Botes and Odwa Ndungane.

In the other semi-final, table-topping Western Province will play the Blue bulls at Newlands.

The Johannesburg game kicks off at 14h30, with the Cape Town encounter starting at 17h00, both on Saturday.
