Player rest requirements and the ban to Bismarck du Plessis have had a knock-on effect for Ryan Strudwick and the Sharks XV, who go into Saturday’s Vodacom Cup game against Western Province featuring a new skipper among several other changes to their squad.

With Monde Hadebe promoted to the Super Rugby bench, another hooker, Franco Marais, will lead the side. Matt Stevens moves from tighthead to loose (replacing Thomas du Toit) with Marne Coetzee coming in to start in the number 3 jersey. Etienne Oosthuizen shifts from lock to blindside flank (replacing the injured Jean-Luc du Preez) with Hyron Andrews earning a first start as JC Astle’s locking partner.

The centres and back three remain unchanged from last week, with Lionel Cronje and Cameron Wright coming in as the new halfback pairing, following Stefan Ungerer and Fred Zeilinga’s promotions to the super Rugby bench. Young prop Mazamo Majola (unrelated to flanker Khaya) and prop-cum-hooker Johan “Mees” Erasmus are new faces on the bench this week, as is Ayron Schramm who joins Sias Koen as utility forward replacements. Samoan Sevens representative Paul Perez also comes onto the bench and looks ready to taste action in a Sharks jersey for the first time since the pre-season warm-up against Toulon.
