Impi flavour for Sharks XV

Ryan Strudwick has backed key players from his Varsity shield champion UKZN Impi side for Saturday’s Vodacom cup match against Free State. Innocent Radebe, the young flyhalf who is the talk of the KZN rugby town, will wear the number 10 jersey this week.

With both Franco Marais and Monde Hadebe moving up to the Sharks squad proper, a gap at hooker has opened up, one filled by a former Sharks under 19 captain and fellow Impi stalwart in Chris de Beer. He packs down in the middle of a new-look front row, featuring former flanker Hendrik Potgieter at loosehead prop and Junior Springbok representative Marne Coetzee on the tight. JC Astle packs down with Hyron Andrews in the second row, while the du Preez twins, Jean-Luc and Daniel, comprise the loose trio along with open side Khaya Majola.

There’s experience on either side of Radebe, with scrumhalf (and captain) Stefan Ungerer and inside centre Heimar Williams both boasting Super Rugby caps. Legend Marwana starts at 13, while a back three reshuffle sees Alcino Izaacs shift to fullback, making way for Neil Maritz on the right wing. A promising club player, Charlie Mayeza, gets an opportunity on the left.

Spare a thought, if you will, for unlucky Jaco van Tonder, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Western Province in the Sharks XV’s last outing.

New faces in the squad this week on the bench are lock Christiaan de Bruyn (a former Bulls junior) and Japanese utility back Tony Vaihu, who looks to have followed Gary Gold to Durban from the Kobe Steelers. There’s also a welcome return to Vodacom Cup action for Tyler Fisher.

Sharks XV: 15 Alcino Izaacs, 14 Neil Maritz, 13 Nkululeko Marwana, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Charles Mayeza, 10 Innocent Radebe, 9 Stefan Ungerer (capt), 8 Daniel du Preez, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 Hyron Andrews, 5 JC Astle, 3 Marne Coetzee, 2 Chris de Beer, 1 Hendrik Potgieter
Replacements: 16 Mees Erasmus, 17 Mzamo Majola, 18 Christiaan De Bruin, 19 Johan Meyer, 20 Cameron Wright, 21 Tony Vaihu, 22 Tyler Fisher
