Cheetahs in coaching overhaul

The Cheetahs have made some rather significant changes to their coaching structures, effective on completion of this year’s Super Rugby tournament.

Naka Drotske has decided to retire from coaching, with assistant Os du Randt also released to pursue an overseas coaching opportunity.

Shimlas coach Franco Smith, who won the Varsity cup in fine style this year at his first attempt, will take over as head coach, both for Currie Cup and Super Rugby. Last year’s Currie cup coach, Rory Duncan, has been appointed Director of Rugby.

It’s interesting that the Cheetahs are now moving to a model where they have a completely hands-off Director of Rugby, similar to what Western Province have in the form of Gert Smal. It’s rather different to the current setup in Durban, where Gary Gold does the coaching himself.
