Sharks prop Thomas du Toit opened the scoring for the Junior Springboks in their second pool match on Saturday, when they beat Samoa at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma Italy.

The Junior Boks scored two first half tries and a further three plus a penalty try in the second half as they recorded their second bonus point win at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

Tight head prop du Toit and lock Jason Jenkins scored the Junior Boks’ first half tries. Brandon Thomson converted du Toit’s try and added a further three penalties as the Boks took a 21 – 3 half-time lead.

Captain Hanro Liebenberg scored his team’s third try five minutes into the second half to extend their lead to 26 – 3 after Thomson failed with the conversion.

Left wing, Leolin Zas scored the bonus point try minutes later. Thomson successfully added the extras as the Junior Boks led 33 – 3 after fifty minutes.

Samoan outside back Pisi Leilua scored his team’s only try in the sixtieth minute, Malu Falaniko missed the conversion as they trailed by twenty five points with less then fifteen minutes on the clock.

The referee awarded a penalty try in the dying seconds as the Springboks’ powerful scrum was just too much for the Samoans, replacement Tinus du Beer added the extras as the match ended 40 – 8.

“This was a much better show than against Italy in our opening match. Our set-pieces worked very well today, although I think we can still improve in our line-out play,”

“We will now go and study the play of Australia and do some homework on them to prepare for the final pool match,” said Junior Springboks captain, Hanro Liebenberg.

Junior Springboks (21) 40 – Tries: Thomas du Toit, Jason Jenkins, Hanro Liebenberg, Leolin Zas, Penalty Try. Conversions: Brandon Thomson (2). Thinus de Beer. Penalties: Thomson (3).

Samoa (3) 8 – Try: Pisi Leilua. Penalty: Malu Falaniko.
