Gold to speak at unique breakfast event

Please see the release below regarding a unique opportunity to get some honest insights from Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold. Be aware that Sharksworld is not officially involved in this event in any way – we’re just raising awareness since it seems an interesting opportunity for fans.

It hasn’t been fun being a Sharks fan this season. Tipped as possible top two finishers at the start of the season, the campaign has lurched from one disaster to another. A home defeat against the Cheetahs set the tone as injury and ill discipline undermined all the good intentions of the players and coaching staff. The Sharks’ play-off hopes effectively ended a few weeks back and the final two home matches offered only the chance to regain lost pride.

Coach Gary Gold has been at the centre of the storm all the way through. Having only arrived a week or two before the tournament began Gold was always playing catch up and working things out as he went along. Not an ideal situation and it appears that the whole structure has suffered as a result. So what went wrong? Rather than keep his head below the trenches as the bullets fly, Gold has agreed to face the fans and answer the tough questions at a breakfast in Durban on Friday 10 July.

· Why has discipline on the field been such an issue?
· How has recent coach turnover impacted on the team?
· Why are so many Sharks players being injured?
· Why are so many Sharks players opting to play overseas? Are the Du Plessis brothers, Willem Alberts and Frans Steyn joining Jake White in France?
· What about the captaincy conundrum? Who will captain the side going forward?
· What role does Brendan Venter play? Does he only pop in on Monday and then fly back to Cape Town? How does this muddle strategy and tactics?
· What has happened to the once thriving Sharks Academy? Outside recruitment now seems the preferred squad-building strategy with players from the Pumas and overseas arriving regularly. The Cheetahs have also been raided.
· Why are the Sharks junior teams making little impact in the various national competitions?
· Just how healthy are the Sharks player structures from junior to senior level going forward?

It won’t be an easy morning for Gold but he is determined to front up and take a hard look at his first Super Rugby season and look ahead to how he intends fixing things. The recent acquisitions of Jacques Potgieter, Willie le Roux, Philip van der Walt, Joe Pietersen and possibly Cornal Hendricks suggests he is hard at work building his own squad.
