Marcell the latest Japanese “casualty”

Marcell Coetzee will represent the Honda Heat side in Japan at the end of this year, with his agents having confirmed a short-term deal between November 2015 and January 2016.

Coetzee, who is widely expected to be part of the Springboks’ World Cup squad, will seemingly look at the Japanese deal as a way to provide a bit of a financial boost before returning to South Africa to play Super Rugby.

The Supersport website suggests that Coetzee will return to the Sharks after his spell with Honda, but I find it rather ominous that the tweet from In Touch Sports on which their story is based doesn’t actually say that. We know that Coetzee is out of contract at the end of this year and since the Sharks haven’t announced a new deal, it’s perhaps fair to assume that one hasn’t been concluded yet – sources continue to link the Stormers and Western Province with a big offer for the player.

Two other players from the In Touch stable have concluded Japanese deals of similar length, but in the case of the Bulls’ JJ Engelbrecht and the Lions’ Andries Ferreira, both were confirmed as returning to those respective teams for Super Rugby in 2016.

We await clarification from both the Sharks and In Touch as to exactly which jersey Marcell Coetzee will wear when he returns to South Africa at the end of January next year.
