Sharks confirm Mjekevu signing

Wandile Mjekevu has joined the Sharks on a two-year contract and will be available for Currie Cup and Super Rugby, effective July 2015.

The 24-year-old utility three-quarter is at home at both wing and outside center and joins the Sharks from French club Perpignan. Mjekevu moved to the French south west in 2013 after a frustrating period as a junior Sharks player, where a lack of opportunities to progress under then coach John Plumtree was cited as a major source of unhappiness.

Time and space can often bring new perspective, though and Mjekevu certainly appears to have matured as a player in his time away. At 1.90m and 94kg, he does not lack for size and still boasts the blistering pace that saw him emerge as a potential superstar on his Super Rugby debut for the Lions, as a raw 19 year old back in 2010.

“We are delighted that Wandile has decided to return to the Cell C Sharks” says Gary Gold. “He had a great stint in France and he is an unbelievable prospect. His strength and agility around the park will most certainly bolster our backline and we look forward to him progressing at the franchise.”

“I am thrilled to be back in Durban,” adds the player. “I’m looking forward to being a part of and contributing within the new and exciting set-up at the Cell C Sharks.”

Welcome back to Durban, Jakes. Let’s make it better the second time around.
