What they had to say: Sharks vs Pumas, Round 1

Hi Sharks (and Bok fans)…What a terrible way to enjoy a long weekend ‘holiday’ on the Coast. I battled traffic all the way from Secunda in time to make the 18:00 kick-off, only to be subjected to an abject, lack-lustre first half display from the Sharks. They looked disinterested and seemed more keen to get off the field and back to Durban. On Saturday I went to my first ever Bok game, more on that debacle later.

The media reports reflect more of what I’ve said above, so let’s dive into it. Please note that there are no overseas reports that I can see.

Media:

“The Sharks opened their 2015 Absa Currie Cup campaign on a disappointing note after losing 33-24 to the Pumas at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday evening.” – news24.com

“”We had a very good first half but unfortunately we didn’t have the same tempo and ball continuity in the second half,” Mentz said.” – news24.com

“The visitors were found wanting in all facets of the match during the first 40 minutes as the Pumas turned ball over at will, winning the breakdowns and stealing line-outs with ease as lock Marius Coetzer proved to be a thorn in the Sharks’ side.” – supersport.com

“This would have been considered a shock result not so long ago, but that was before the Pumas’ progression and the Sharks’ decline. The hosts were full value for their win and, based on this performance, will be serious semi-final contenders in a competition shorn of its Springboks.” – sarugbymag.co.za

“Having been dominated at the collisions, with the Pumas also superior in the set pieces and the breakdowns, the Sharks awoke in the second half to close the gap to 24-30 – with less than 10 minutes to go.” – rugby365.com

Twitter:

“The two worst commentators I have ever heard commentating on a rugby game. Please @SuperSportRugby employ intelligent people.#sharksvspumas”

“First Currie Cup game and I’m not inspired yet… #SharksRugby #SSRugby”

“Disappointing Season Opener”

“@TheSharksZA @StevalPumas time to put the trigger and get rid of John and Gary”

Let’s hope that next week’s report is more positive.
