Significant win for under 21s

Big congratulations to Marius Louw and the Sharks under 21 side for grinding out a massively important 20-19 win over the table-topping Lion on Saturday afternoon.

Loose forwards Ayron Schramm and Graham Geldenhuys scored tries to bookend a performance that saw the Sharks moslty dominate the forward exchanges, although they had to rely on Inny-Christian Radebe’s boot to a large extent as well. So often this season, the Sharks have started well at this level, only to finish poorly, but this week they stayed in touch thanks to a number of converted scrum penalties, before Geldenhuys’s late try set up a stunning victory.

Schramm’s earlier score came off the back of a dominant scrum performance on the Lions’ 5m line and with this set piece beset by such woes at senior level, it’s encouraging to know that the Sharks under 21 props, at least, can scrum.

Radebe scored ten points on the day, via two conversions and two penalties and is now clear at the top of the competition’s individual points scoring table, despite missing the first two games of the season. The win moves the Sharks into fourth on the log, with a move up to second not out of the question should they prevail against the Kings this weekend.

Sharks u21 20 (10). Tries: Ayron Schramm, Graham Geldenhuys. Conversions: Innocent Radebe (2). Penalties: Innocent Radebe.
Golden Lions u21 19 (7). Tries: Aphiwe Dyantyi, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Victor Sekekete. Conversions: Brandan Hewitt, Shaun Reynolds.

Earlier in the day, the under 19 side lost their fifth match in six starts, going down 18-36 to the Lions.
