Claassens, Ndungane not on long-term injured list

Sharks coach Gary Gold confirmed at a press conference yesterday that both scrumhalf Michael Claassens and winger Odwa Ndungane would have been available to play this week if needed, but have been stood down as a precautionary measure.

Claasens suffered a lower back contusion, while Ndungane picked up a similar injury to his rib. According to Gold, both could have played if it had been a crunch game, but given that he feels he has adequate cover in both positions, the wisest course of action is to give them a week off to allow the bruises to heal.

He also revealed that his philosophy is that returning Boks should consider themselves automatic first-choice players, hence Cobus Reinach’s immediate elevation to the starting lineup ahead of Stefan Ungerer, who remains on the bench. Gold and the other coaches are hoping for an 80-minute performance this week, something that has eluded the team thus far in the 2015 Currie Cup.

Khaya Majola (knee), SP Marais (knee/ankle), Wiehan Hay (groin), Jean Deysel (tricep) and Lourens Adriaanse (shoulder) all remain on the injured list.
