Province take (all) the points

The Sharks have put their fans through another tame home ground capitulation, allowing Western Province to leave Kings Park with five Currie Cup log points in an embarrassing 27-37 defeat.

In front of a small crowd that contained a huge number of stalwart players from the golden years, this year’s bunch proved again just what pretenders they are to the lofty throne of Sharks team gone by. A hard-earned 17-10 half-time advantage (thanks to four penalties from the boot of flyhalf Joe Pietersen and an unconverted try to Andre Esterhuizen) lasted just minutes in a second half that the Sharks barely seemed interested in at all.

Three tries to the visitors ensued, seeing them become the third team in four attempts to claim a four-try bonus point at “fortress” Kings Park this Currie Cup season. With the Sharks content to hoof every bit of hard-won possession down the throats of the Province back three (and then neglect to tackle as those men ran back at them), it took just 13 minutes of the second period for a 7-point lead to turn into a 14-point deficit, one from which the home side could not recover, despite Odwa Ndungane’s 60th minutes score.

With Province having extended their lead to 10 via a Demetri Catrakilis penalty shortly before the end, it fell to Pietersen to salvage a bonus point for his side with a last-gasp kick. Needless to say, he missed.

Sharks: Tries: Esterhuizen, Ndungane; Conversions: Pietersen; Penalties: Pietersen 5.
Western Province: Tries: Senatla, Elstadt, Leyds, Mbonambi; Conversions: Du Preez (4); Penalties: Du Preez (2), Catrakilis.
