On a day when there was little to celebrate, results-wise, at Ellis Park, the Sharks under 21 side stood up and delivered a great performance to record their second victory of the year over their Golden Lions counterparts. Victors by a single point when these sides clashed in Durban earlier in the year, the Sharks under 21 side extended that margin this time around, winning 27-23 after a late Lions score made the result seem a little closer.

With Inny Radebe enjoying a flawless day off the tee (two missed drop goals notwithstanding), the Sharks recovered from an early Lions penalty to forge ahead via a converted try to lock Johan du Toit. Radebe kicked two further penalties (countered like for like by opposite number Kobus Engelbrecht), before the Sharks struck again, this time via right wing Neil Maritz. The two tries to none against in the half gave the home side a 20-9 lead heading into the second period.

That score lasted for all of the third quarter, before the Lions struck back with their first score in the 57th minute. Replacement prop Barend Potgieter scored a third for the Sharks not long afterwards, with Radebe’s fifth successful kick moving the Sharks out to 27-16 leaders. A late score by the Lions earned them a bonus point, but the Sharks under 21s are now well placed to make a push into the top four, with a game in hand over the side in fourth.

Golden Lions 23 (9). Tries: Gerdus van der Walt, Jurie Linde. Conversions: Brandan Hewitt (2). Penalties: Kobus Engelbrecht (3).
Sharks 27 (20). Tries: Barend Potgieter, Johan du Toit, Neil Maritz. Conversions: Inny Christian Radebe (3), Penalties: Inny Christian Radebe (2).

Two tries by powerful winger S’busiso Nkosi were unfortunately not enough to save the Sharks under 19s from yet another defeat in the earlier game – they ended up losing 22-28 to the Lions after leading 22-9 at half time.

Golden Lions 28 (9). Tries: Arno Maree (2), Len Massyn. Conversions: Hendrik Mulder (2). Penalties: Hendrik Mulder (3).
Sharks 22 (15). Tries: S’busiso Nkosi (2), Tristan Blewett. Conversions: Tristan Tedder (2). Penalty: Tristan Tedder.
