SP Marais moving on

Sharks fullback SP Marais confirmed via Twitter on Friday that he will be moving on from Durban after nearly three years with the team.

Marais joined the side ahead of the 2013 Currie Cup campaign, on the back of a solid maiden Super Rugby season for the Kings. He did well in that competition, establishing himself as first-choice fullback in the side that won the title under caretaker coach Brenden Venter. Perhaps affected to a greater extent than others by the coaching merry-go-round that followed, SP struggled to maintain that consistency in the Super Rugby season that followed, with Jake White eventually losing patience and shifting Lwazi Mvovo to fullback instead. A frustrating 18 months followed for Marais, with injury curtailing his participation in both the Super Rugby and Currie Cup campaigns this year, after a relatively good 2014 Currie Cup.

Marais did not reveal his destination, but we have it on good authority that he’ll be returning to PE to play for the Kings in Super Rugby next season. In his tweets, he thanked the Sharks for the opportunity to represent them and all the fans for their support and I’d like to reciprocate by thanking SP for his contributions to the cause over the last 3 years. All the best for the future, SP.
